Our famous string of holes – 5th, 6th and 7th

THE 5TH HOLE

Ranked as one of the best holes in Australia, Newcastle Golf Club’s 5th hole is a favourite with the members.

The second shot on the 5th hole at Newcastle is 368 metres, par 4 dogleg left, where a good drive finishes in a lovely swale, leaving a demanding mid to long iron shot to the green. Into a stiff southerly on-shore breeze, the second shot may frequently need to be a fairway wood.

The green is tightly guarded by bunkers on both sides, the deep one on the left being particularly demanding.

It is nearly impossible to run the ball onto this green, as a ridge in front of the green guides it unfailingly into the bunkers on either side.

The acclaimed hole was also featured by renowned golfing journalist Tom Ramsey in his book, The Best 18 Holes in Australia.

Be proud if you make par on the 5th, as one of the top ranked holes in Australia, par is a real accomplishment.

THE 6TH HOLE

The 367m, par 4, 6th hole at Newcastle Golf Club is ranked in the top 500 golf holes in the world.

The drive must be very straight to avoid the steep hill and the trees on the left, and the slope on the right which guides the ball into rough and more trees.

The second shot must hit the elevated green on the full to avoid the severe penalty of a short shot running 20 or 30 metres back down the hill.

The slope on the green keeps golfers fully concentrated if they want to two-putt.

As one of only sixteen holes from Australia to be featured in The Best 500 Holes in the World, the 6th provides an exciting challenge for any golfer.

THE 7TH HOLE

The stunning and testing 7th hole at Newcastle Golf Club continually wins design acclaim and is ranked as one of the best 18 holes in the world, outside of the USA and the British Isles.

This fantastic par 3, has deep front bunkers requiring the golfer to hit his ball onto the green – and to hold it there. Shots that are too long roll down the slope at the back of the green. A delicate chip shot is needed for the golfer to secure his par.

Despite its design acclaim many members would argue for the 485 metre par 5 10th hole, with its undulations requiring blind tee and second shots, to be a better hole, or the two short par 4s, the 8th and the 11th.
